The longest-enduring standardized college admissions test in the nation, the SAT has faced decades of controversy over bias and criticism for reducing aspiring college students to a test score. Discrepancies with standardized testing appear to be symptomatic of the inequality endemic to the education system. In 2005, the College Board added an 800-point writing section to the exam alongside its math and verbal reasoning sections. The eye-popping numbers are part of a longer-term shift toward private college housing. Moody's Analytics recently warned of an "affordability crisis" for college students, noting that since 2019, rents for student housing in a sample of notable college towns had grown faster than those of regular apartments. Student housing goes privateThe gold rush in student housing is a relatively new phenomenon. Back in the 1980s and '90s, most college students either lived in bland, cinder-block-walled dorms or in conventional apartments farther from campus. Even with his frugality, he came to realize that the prices in West Campus were "impossible to rationalize" for a college student.

CNN —The James Webb Space Telescope has delivered yet another astounding discovery, spying an active supermassive black hole deeper into the universe than has ever been recorded. And scientists were perplexed to find just how small the celestial object’s central black hole measures. “This black hole clocks in at about 9 million solar masses,” according to a NASA news release. Into the CEERS 1019 galaxyThe relative smallness of the black hole at CEER 1019’s center is a mystery for scientists. The astronomical community is already pouring over data that could pinpoint other, more distant black holes.

Billionaire Ken Griffin's Citadel internship program is attracting more students than ever before. Citadel, the $57 billion hedge fund, and market maker Citadel Securities recruit hundreds of undergraduate and graduate students every year for an 11-week summer internship program. The internship starts Monday, with a kickoff week at the Four Seasons in Fort Lauderdale and Palm Beach. "We think of campus recruiting very much the same way that other firms think of executive recruiting," Mitro said. "All of it is geared towards simulating what life would be like for them if they were to join the firm," Mitro said.

Neuroscientists at the University of Texas in Austin have figured out a way to translate scans of brain activity into words using the very same artificial intelligence technology that powers the groundbreaking chatbot ChatGPT. Before entering the fMRI machine, CNN correspondent Donie O'Sullivan was given specialized earphones to listen to an audiobook during his brain scan. While the technology is still in its infancy and shows great promise, the limitations might be a source of relief to some. While the technology at the moment only works in very limited cases, that might not always be the case. “Technology can improve and that could change how well we can decode and change whether decoders require a person’s cooperation.”

CNN —Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin wrote a letter strongly criticizing an ongoing hold on senior military promotions and nominations in the Senate led by Republican lawmakers, saying it would create a “perilous precedent” for the military and impose “unconscionable” burdens on military families. The Senate approves thousands of civilian and military nominations every year, typically through unanimous consent. But Austin warned in his letter to Warren that the nominations need to be approved as quickly as possible. The United States military relies on the deep experience and strategic expertise of our senior military leaders,” he said. “The longer that this hold persists, the greater the risk the US military runs in every theater, every domain, and every service.”
Scientists say they trained AI to recreate a story from a brain scan. The AI was able to read their brainwaves and recreate the story accurately, per a study. The AI was able to accurately predict what the story was about by reading only the participant's brainwaves, per the study. The story doesn't come out exactly like it was told An annotated diagram shows how the AI can read brainwaves and generate a story. The technique can't break into private thoughtsScientists used this brain scanner to collect brainwaves to feed to the AI.
A Russian official said his country is "saving" children that it takes from Ukraine, not "stealing" them. "Russia is not denying that you are transporting children in their thousands from Ukraine into Russia. We've been accused of stealing children but of fact we were saving children, from Ukrainian army first and foremost." Ukraine's government said in March that, since Russia's invasion in February 2022, 16,226 Ukrainian children had been deported to Russia. "So what you did to them, if you read the Geneva Convention, is a war crime."
Microsoft unveiled new versions of its Bing internet-search engine and Edge browser powered by the newest technology from ChatGPT maker OpenAI. But the biggest one of all may be next, he says, through the combination of artificial intelligence and branches of science involved in medicine. But the opportunity won't translate into achievement without a new form of collaboration between the classic big tech talent and the medical field. One of her portfolio companies, Insitro, was founded by Stanford AI researcher Daphne Koller (Koller co-founder edtech company Coursera). "There is lots of exciting big talent opportunities coming from big tech and big cap pharma," she said.
Imani Tatum is leaving Austin after living there for the past three years. "I wanted to create a place where specifically marginalized people could be tattooed, while being safe and enjoying themselves," Tatum told Insider. Tatum said she's done: she's closing Nana's Prayers, packing her bags and heading to a new city in May. But affordable housing remains scarce in the city, and that's driving out many minority residents, like Tatum. While price growth has slowed in Austin, the city's median home price still sits at a staggering $525,000, $140,000 above the US median sale price, according to real estate brokerage Redfin.
Citadel, one of the largest hedge funds, accepts just 1% of applicants to its associate program. Few college students know what a hedge fund is, let alone that they want to work for one. Its associate program lets aspiring fund managers skip the traditional two-year investment banking program that is usually a prerequisite for a hedge fund job. The associate program is different from Citadel's broader internship program. But the accelerated nature of the CAP program appealed to him over other opportunities, he said.
When he announced his decision to provide Abrams tanks to Ukraine, President Joe Biden made a point to say Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin had recommended the move. Biden wasn’t initially sold on sending the tanks, despite pressure to do so to give cover to Germany to send Ukraine some Leopard 2 tanks, the officials said. But because Germany had said it would send Leopards to Ukraine if the U.S. agreed to commit tanks, too, the U.S. promise of a future delivery opened the door for Germany to send tanks to Ukraine now. In the case of the tanks, U.S. military leaders argued the Leopards and the U.K.’s Challengers were much better options. Military leaders, namely Milley, also have been more publicly vocal about the importance of potential talks to end the war.
UT Austin and Texas A&M announced a ban on TikTok from school WiFi and devices this week. Since the ban, students are sharing their frustration with Texas officials. Students told Insider there are more pressing safety matters that university officials should be looking into. In the December press release, Abbott cited data harvesting and potential surveillance of its users as the reason, but students told Insider they aren't convinced there's a big threat. "A&M is a big school, and it's easy to get overwhelmed," the student told Insider.
One tank Kyiv really wants is the German-made Leopard, but it hasn't been able to get them. These formidable main battle tanks would provide a massive firepower boost on the battlefield. Ukraine is getting many of the items on its wish list, but it hasn't been able to get its hands on the German-made Leopard tanks it wants. The country's president previously said he wanted to send the tanks to Ukraine as part of an "international coalition." Fast, mobile, and well-armedThe Leopard 2 is Germany's main battle tank developed by defense firm Krauss-Maffei Wegmann.
Several Latinos whose lives and work left a profound imprint on American institutions — from arts and entertainment to legal and civil rights — passed away in 2022. Cavazos began his education in a two-room schoolhouse on the King Ranch in Texas, where his father was a foreman. President Reagan named Cavazos Secretary of Education in 1988, making him the first Hispanic ever to serve in the U.S. Together, “Luis” and Maria” showed young audiences that Latinos were people who worked, fell in love and were part of their community. Her goals were to give Latinos a presence in the dance world, and to instill pride in Hispanic culture.
As the Covid pandemic raged around them, Ari Kaplan, his wife, Hannah Phillips-Kaplan, an interior designer, and son, now 13, were looking for somewhere new to live after nearly two decades in Los Angeles. “We wanted to raise our son somewhere more wholesome and with a stronger sense of community,” said Mr. Kaplan, 50, the chief financial officer for e-commerce company Mamenta. “And we talked about Austin, Portland, Charlotte, Denver and New York,” he said. The Kaplans’ list quickly whittled down to New York and Denver. But in the former “I’d just be changing one crazy for another crazy,” Mr. Kaplan said, while the latter felt just “too liberal and crunchy.” And so the Kaplans landed in Tulsa, Okla., the hometown of Ms. Phillips-Kaplan, 43, spurred by family connections, the city’s booming tech scene, its reasonably priced upmarket housing and its middle-of-the-road political climate.
